One of North Americas two marvelously elegant black-and-white grebes Clarks Grebe is a bird of Western lakes and coastlines. The Clarks Grebe is an aquatic species that breeds in large colonies on big lakes and wetlands in many areas of the western United States of America parts of southern Alberta and Manitoba in Canada and in central Mexico. Its sinuous neck and angular head give it an almost snakelike air and its elaborate rushing ceremonya courtship display it shares with its close relative the Western Grebecan make it look as if ballet dancers have taken to the water.

Black cap ends just above red eye so the eye looks isolated in the white face. Clarks grebe is a about 25 inches in length and may be confused with western grebe. Its sinuous neck and angular head give it an almost snakelike air and its elaborate rushing ceremonya courtship display it shares with its close relative the Western Grebecan make it look as if ballet dancers have taken to the water. The Clarks grebe has a bright yellow or bold orange-yellow bill while the western grebes bill is much darker and has a strong olive-green or gray tinge.

Because of its coloration a western grebes bill may appear narrower or slightly upturned especially in dim light. Clarks Grebes can live to be 15 years old.
